Anti Wrinkle Treatments

Soften Fine Lines & Anti-Wrinkle Treatments

The first signs of ageing start to become apparent on the surface of the skin from your mid 20s. Fine lines will appear first and over time there will be a noticeable increase in wrinkles, loss of volume and a loss of density, especially to the facial area.

These factors contribute  to the face ageing

Face Ageing Factor

Wrinkles are a natural progression of the ageing process., where skin becomes thinner, drier, loses elasticity and is less able to protect itself from damage. Wrinkles can be creases, lines or folds in the skin. There are two types of facial wrinkles.

Dynamic wrinkles

These are caused by the pull of the facial muscles during repeated animated and facial expression and are seen with movements of the face when conveying emotion. Example facial areas with these wrinkles include forehead lines, frown lines, crows feet and smile lines.

Static lines

These are caused by extrinsic factors such as sun damage, pollution and smoking and the lines are seen when the face is at rest and not moving.

Anti wrinkle injections can be used to soften fine lines and wrinkles and to prevent lines from developing and deepening further.

The potential full effect can be seen after 2 weeks and the treatment can last between 3-6 months (depending on the area) and will gradually wear off after this time.

Frown Lines

Frown Lines

These lines are found between the eyebrows and are the result of tissue gathering into a fold. Over time, frowning and squinting will leave deep ‘dynamic’ wrinkles in this area and additionally on the bridge of the nose which can often result in an ‘angry’ appearance.

Forehead Lines

Forehead Lines

Due to both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the collagen production in your skin decreases and the strength of the elastin deteriorates causing your skin to lose suppleness and firmness, which in turn produces more defined fine lines and wrinkles.

Crows Lines

Crows Feet

These are found around the corners of your eyes. Age and sun exposure can be a cause, in addition to repeated muscle contractions and the loss of skin elasticity and collagen. Anti wrinkle treatment will smooth this skin out by relaxing the muscles temporarily in this area.

Chemical Brow Lift

Chemical Brow Lift

On the face, the squinting muscles pull the eyebrow downwards while the forehead muscles pull it upward. Over time, this upward holding effect weakens due to excessive use and gravitational pull.

In addition, loss of skin fat creates a ‘sagging’ look, particularly over the lateral aspect of the eyes, making the eyes look tired or sleepy.

The anti wrinkle product will marginally raise the eyebrows, hence lifting the skin up and opening the eye. This an excellent treatment to complement the crows feet treatment.

Bunny Lines

These lines are wrinkles that appear over and alongside the bridge of the nose. The lines created can be static (seen at rest) or active (seen on movements such as laughing or talking).

They can progress towards the cheek and eye area and can result in a ‘stressed appearance’ for some. Bunny lines can be treated effectively with a small amount of product injected on either side of the nose.

Gummy Smile

Gummy Smile

A ‘gummy smile’ is the prominence of gum tissue when smiling. This can be a source of embarrassment for some people and they can often avoid smiling in photographs as they are unable to fully close their mouth or they feel very self-conscious.

Factors leading to this include

  • A short upper lip
  • Elevation of the upper lip due to a hyperactive muscle
  • Gums that are enlarged or long (gingival hypertrophy)
  • Teeth that may appear short and remain partially covered by gum tissue
  • The appearance of the gums ‘bulging out’ due to an overgrowth of the upper jaw (vertical maxillary excess)

A small amount of anti wrinkle product can be injected into the top half of the muscle, to reduce the muscle activity and allow a delicate drop in the top lip. To provide some balance, patients additionally have lip filler in order to prevent the lips sliding above the teeth.

Smoker Lines

There are many types of wrinkles that can form around the mouth. ‘Smokers lines’, also known as vertical ‘lipstick lines’, are the result of many years of smoking, diet, genetics, sun damage and natural ageing. They can be static (present at rest) or active (present on contraction) and can appear above and/or below the lips in the distribution of the ‘orbicularis oris’ muscle, a strap-like muscle around the mouth.

The area can be treated with a combination of both anti-wrinkle product to relax the muscle and dermal filler to replenish the lost volume leading to aesthetically pleasing results. This treatment can last up to 4 months using this treatment alone, or longer if combined with dermal fillers

Downturned Corners of the Mouth

Downturned Corners of the Mouth

A small amount of product into the correct muscle can diminish the downward pull on the corners of the mouth and allow the muscles that elevate the corners to take over hence subtly lifting the corners of the mouth.

'Pebbled/Dimpled’ Chin

The chin is formed with the jawbone and the ‘mentalis’ muscle.

Chronic spasm or over activity of this muscle can lead to the ‘dimpled/pebblestone’ appearance on the skin surface. This can be corrected using anti wrinkle product by injecting into the mentalis muscle and relaxing it. This results in the reduction of the chin dimpling and a smoother appearance.

Excessive Sweating

Excessive Sweating

This common condition can cause much anxiety and distress to suffering patients due to the impact it can have on their daily life. Rarely, this condition is due to metabolic, neurologic and other systemic disease but in the majority of cases there is no known cause for this condition. This product will block the chemical at the end of the nerves and in this case will ‘turn off’ the sweat glands to reduce the level of sweating.

This treatment involves administering small multiple injections in the armpit region and the process is relatively pain free.

Neck Lift (Platysmal bands & The ‘Nefertiti’ Lift’)

The platysmal muscle on the neck is often neglected but holds indicative signs of ageing. Over time, the platsymal bands become thicker and more visible due to the loss of collagen and elastin in addition to the laxity of the neck muscles.

These bands can become relaxed using a small amount of product over this area resulting in a smoother neck as a well as a 15% lift and jaw definition.

Wide Set Jaw/Teeth Grinding

Wide Set Jaw/ Teeth Grinding

In some patients, the masseter muscle (a chewing muscle) is enlarged creating extra facial width. Jawline reduction using anti wrinkle injections is a specialised technique to reduce the width of the jawline changing an overly square jawline to a more attractive oval or heart shaped face.

Some factors leading to a ‘masculine’ square jaw due to an enlarged masseter muscle include

  • Ethinicity – The majority of men and women of Asian descent have a square jaw, which can add to the ‘masculine’ appearance.
  • The jaw muscle can expand in size due to constant or excessive chewing.
  • Teeth clenching or ‘Bruxism’(painful teeth grinding) – This can lead to the masseter muscle expanding or muscle hypertrophy

The anti-wrinkle product is selectively injected into the jawlines, which weakens this muscle over time leading to an overall reduction in the size of this muscle. The masseter jaw muscle continues to soften and is noticeable after 2 weeks. The jaw will continue to ‘slim’ down for another few months.
